New Website to Launch in September

Groundwork will launch its new website the first week of September. The site overhaul was made possible by a generous Direct Technical Assistance Grant from the United Way.

"We've worked closely with NPower NY to come up with a new site that is more user-friendly and will give visitors a better experience," says Groundwork's Development Manager, Anthony Buissereth, who's played a central role in facilitating the overhaul. "We think that all of our external stakeholders who use the site will appreciate it."

Nothing about the executive dining room at American Express (AXP), on the 50th floor at the company's downtown Manhattan headquarters, suggests not-for-profit. But on a recent afternoon, 24 employees of nonprofits sank into oversized dinner chairs, listening to AmEx Chief Executive Kenneth I. Chenault. "You can learn a great deal about leadership if you take it as seriously as other disciplines," Chenault said. "Most people don't."

A few years ago, Frank Rogers found himself at a crossroads. The child of drug addicts, he spent most of his childhood in New York City's notorious foster-care system, bouncing between homes in Harlem, Brooklyn and the South Bronx. By age 20, he was a college dropout hanging out on the corner with dealers and getting into trouble with the law.

"I felt like no one cared, like I was left behind," says Rogers, now 22. "I knew I needed to make a change or I'd wind up dead or in prison."

There had been a police shooting and serious talk of public school re-segregation.

That was in 1997, but the task force, an offshoot of Foundation of the Carolinas, is still at work.
